As a student in the Steelworker for the Future craft training program, you'll study to become a Maintenance Technician, with an electrical or a mechanical emphasis. You can expect your duties to include the following:

  • Perform all functions (mechanical or electrical) necessary to maintain all operations and service equipment using standard and specialized tools and equipment
  • Make (mechanical or electrical) repairs as required in connection with their (mechanical or electrical) service
  • Operate equipment in conjunction with repairs and provide assistance in operating functions as necessary to keep equipment running
  • May work alone, with minimal supervision, or with other Maintenance Technicians
  • Coordinate and work in conjunction with Operating and Service Technicians in the performance of maintenance tasks

With further education and experience, there are also dozens of other opportunities open to you, both inside and outside the steel industry. These include Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Metallurgical Engineer and Operations Supervisor.

"The Steelworker for the Future program was presented to me at a time in my life when I was seeking a career, not just a job. I knew I had to take advantage of this type of opportunity and more people should. I definitely recommend seeking a career in the steel industry – there is demand for motivated, well-trained workers."
Mike Fish, Electrical Maintenance Technician, ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor

"I always had an interest in being an electrician, but didn't realize the opportunities in the steel industry. I am very happy with the decision I made to complete the program and join ArcelorMittal. There are good, stable jobs and the industry is going to need more skilled workers in the future. The Steelworker for the Future coursework is very valuable, but the hands-on experience working in the mill was priceless."
Andrew Sweeney, Electrical Maintenance Technician, ArcelorMittal Burns Harbor

The Steelworker for the Future program offers participants the opportunity to earn a degree and hands-on education. ArcelorMittal aims to hire program graduates, contingent upon the state of the economy and business conditions at time of graduation.
